Identify the appliance

Have the model plate ready. Cleaning, log placement and component tests depend on the appliance instructions.

Check the burner and ignition

The service scope should name the pilot, burner and relevant ignition checks. Thermopile output can be measured; replacing a valve by guesswork is not a diagnosis.

Check the exhaust path

Venting and spillage checks depend on the system type. Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule and arrange a check when operation changes.

Keep the licensed scope clear

Gas piping and line alterations are coordinated with a licensed plumber under permit. If you smell gas now, leave and contact the utility or emergency services from a safe place.
